The Shipyard Brewing Company: May 1 Open House Marks 10 Year Anniversary

Portland, Maine (April 14, 2004) -- On May 1 The Shipyard Brewing Company will hold an open house from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm at their brewery at 86 Newbury St. in Portland, Maine. This is the first public event in their year-long 10th anniversary celebration. Attendees will be invited to tour the brewery, enjoy live entertainment and refreshments, meet the team, and see first-hand how Shipyard's award-winning ale is produced and bottled.

"The Shipyard Gift Shop will be stocked with our spring line of limited edition 10 year anniversary wearables and merchandise," said store manager, Irena Black. "There will be exclusive one-day-only specials as well."

Shipyard was founded by master brewer Alan Pugsley and entrepreneur Fred Forsley. On April 24, 1994 they brewed their first batch of fine hand-crafted ale at their facility in Portland.
"People often ask me what it's like coming to work and what motivates me to come to work," remarked Pugsley. "My first answer to that is I've never worked a day in my life because, really, brewing is a way of life."

"There's never a dull moment! I enjoy selling the product, I enjoy making the product, I love the people who I work with. It's truly a dream come true," said Forsley.

Shipyard began in 1992 at Federal Jack's Restaurant and Brew Pub in Kennebunk, which is one of Maine's original brew pubs and working breweries. The Kennebunkport Brewing Company is located downstairs from Federal Jack's and is where Shipyard ales were first brewed. Within two years, demand for Shipyard beer outpaced the small operation and, in 1994, Forsley and Pugsley opened the Shipyard Brewing Company in Portland to keep up with orders for their freshly brewed, hand-crafted ales.

Director of sales and marketing Bruce Forsley recalls this time well. "I still remember one of the sales managers at Nappi Distributors sitting Fred and I down in a meeting and saying 'Fred, there's an old Lebanese proverb --Thou shall not sell fruit from an empty basket -- and Fred said 'I will fill the basket' and he built the brewery in Portland."

When Shipyard expanded to Portland in 1994, instead of building a new facility in an industrial park, Forsley and Pugsley opted to rehabilitate an existing and unsafe site in the heart of Portland's waterfront. Formerly home to a foundry, this building complex had been vacant for a number of years and was falling into disrepair. Shipyard completely rebuilt the structure, turning a defunct property into a vibrant centerpiece of Portland's waterfront.

The Shipyard Brewing Company produces 12 varieties of award-winning English style and seasonal ales. Their products are distributed in 22 states around the country. Plans are in the works for special events throughout the year, including a nationwide Shipyard Export Ale "Simultoast" in November. Discover more at www.shipyard.com.
