Maine native Fred Forsley is the founder and co-owner of The Shipyard Brewing Company, the largest brewery in Maine and a national leader in the craft brew industry.
Shipyard grew out of the Kennebunkport Brewing Company and Federal Jack's Restaurant and Brew Pub which Forsley began in 1992 as a way to turn around a troubled retail development in Kennebunk, Maine. These two businesses became the centerpiece of the property and, along with The Shipyard Brewing Company, continue to prosper today under Forsley's guidance.
Gray, Maine native Fred Forsley is an entrepreneur. Forsley has been involved in a number of business startups involving real estate development, recycling, health care, direct response marketing, and the food and beverage industry. At age 19, he started Fred Forsley Realty and became one of the youngest real estate brokers in Maine to own his own firm. In 1995, he formed a 50:50 partnership with the Miller Brewing Company to extend Shipyard's distribution throughout the United States. In April of 2000, Forsley made the strategic decision to buy back Miller's share of the company and Shipyard became an independent brewery once again.

All of Shipyard's recipes are developed by Master Brewer Alan Pugsley, who is one of the most influential people in the craft brewing movement in North America. Pugsley co-owns the brewery with Forsley.
Pugsley is from England, home of the Ringwood Brewery, where he apprenticed with the grandfather of the microbrewery movement, Peter Austin.
Since moving to the United States over fifteen years ago, Pugsley has assisted with the establishment of more than 65 microbreweries and brew pubs throughout the world. A well known trade journal dubbed Pugsley the "Johnny Appleseed of Brewing," an acknowledgement of the dominant role he has played in the renaissance of craft brewing.
Together, Pugsley and his mentor, Peter Austin, have set up at more than 120 breweries in 17 countries worldwide.

A 1979 graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, Forsley began his career in food and beverage as a means of subsidizing his college education. After a brief period as a bartender and waiter, he accepted a job with Colonial Distributors in 1984 as an on-premise wine sales representative. Four years later, he and his brother Rick purchased the Silver Street Tavern in Waterville and later opened the Silver Street Grille in Portland, Maine. In 1993, Bruce joined his cousin Fred Forsley at the Kennebunkport Brewing Company on a short-term basis to assist in sales and the development of a distribution network for the fledgling brewery. Eleven years later he is still with us!
Today, Forsley oversees sales and marketing for The Shipyard Brewing Company. He has traveled extensively through the beer producing regions of England, Holland, and Germany and his passion for wine has taken him throughout the great wine regions of the world.
